Your journey into the spectacular landscapes of Spiti Valley begins from Manali. After meeting our representative, begin the early morning drive toward Kaza, the administrative capital of Spiti Valley.
The route from Manali to Kaza is one of the most dramatic mountain drives in the Himalayas. The road transitions from the lush green forests of Manali into the rugged, high-altitude desert terrain of Spiti.
The journey begins by crossing the famous Atal Tunnel, a remarkable engineering project built beneath the Pir Panjal mountain range. Stretching over 9 kilometers, the tunnel connects Manali with the remote Lahaul Valley and significantly reduces travel time between the two regions.
As you pass through the tunnel, the scenery begins to change dramatically. The dense forests of Kullu Valley slowly give way to the stark, dramatic landscapes of Lahaul and Spiti.
After crossing Atal Tunnel, the road enters the rugged terrain of Lahaul Valley. The region is characterized by barren mountains, deep valleys, and glacial rivers flowing through the landscape.
Travelers usually pass through remote settlements like Gramphu and Chatru, where the terrain becomes increasingly dramatic and wild.
One of the major highlights of the journey is crossing Kunzum Pass, a high mountain pass that serves as the gateway to Spiti Valley. Located at an altitude of nearly 15,000 feet, the pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of snow-covered peaks and glaciers.

After breakfast, begin an excursion to explore some of the highest inhabited villages and monasteries in the world located around Kaza.
This region of Spiti Valley is famous for its ancient Buddhist monasteries, traditional villages, and spectacular Himalayan landscapes.
The first stop of the day is Key Monastery, the largest and most famous monastery in Spiti Valley. Perched on a hilltop at an altitude of around 13,668 feet, the monastery overlooks the Spiti River and surrounding valley.
Founded over a thousand years ago, Key Monastery serves as an important center of Tibetan Buddhist learning. Inside the monastery, visitors can explore prayer halls, ancient murals, Buddhist scriptures, and meditation rooms used by monks.
The monastery also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Spiti Valley and surrounding snow-capped mountains.
Next, travel to Hikkim Village, famous for housing one of the highest post offices in the world at an altitude of more than 14,000 feet.
Travelers often send postcards from this unique location as a memorable souvenir of their Spiti journey.
The village itself offers stunning views of the surrounding barren mountains and vast valley landscapes.
The final stop of the day is Langza Village, a picturesque settlement located beneath a giant Buddha statue overlooking the valley.

After breakfast at the hotel in Kaza, begin the journey toward Tabo and Dhankar, two of the most culturally significant destinations in Spiti Valley. The drive follows the Spiti River through dramatic desert landscapes, towering cliffs, and small remote villages.
The terrain here represents the classic cold desert environment of Spiti, where rugged mountains, deep valleys, and vast open landscapes create a unique Himalayan atmosphere.
The first stop of the day is the historic Tabo Monastery located in the village of Tabo. Founded in 996 AD, the monastery is one of the oldest functioning Buddhist monasteries in India.
Often referred to as the “Ajanta of the Himalayas,” Tabo Monastery is famous for its ancient murals, beautiful frescoes, and centuries-old Buddhist scriptures preserved inside the temple complex.
The monastery complex includes several meditation halls, temples, and caves where monks have practiced Buddhist teachings for centuries.
Visitors can explore the prayer halls, admire the ancient wall paintings, and experience the peaceful spiritual atmosphere of this historic monastery.
After visiting Tabo, continue the journey toward Dhankar Village. The small settlement is perched dramatically above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers.
Dhankar Monastery is built on the edge of a rocky cliff and offers one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the Spiti Valley.
Historically, Dhankar served as the capital of the Spiti kingdom when the region was ruled by the local royal family known as the Nono.

Chandratal Lake is located at an altitude of approximately 14,000 feet and is famous for its crescent moon shape. The name “Chandratal” literally translates to “Moon Lake.”
Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks and alpine meadows, the lake reflects different shades of blue throughout the day depending on the sunlight.
A short walk from the campsite leads to the lake where visitors can enjoy the peaceful environment and admire the pristine beauty of the landscape.
The area around Chandratal remains largely untouched, making it one of the most serene and photogenic locations in the Spiti region.
In the evening, check into your lakeside campsite. The camps are equipped with comfortable tents, sleeping bags, blankets, and mattresses to ensure a pleasant stay in the high-altitude environment.
The night sky around Chandratal is famous for its incredible stargazing opportunities due to minimal light pollution.
Overnight Stay: Camp near Chandratal Lake
After breakfast at the campsite, begin the journey back toward Manali. The route once again passes through the rugged mountain landscapes of Lahaul Valley before entering the greener valleys near Manali.
On the way back, cross the famous Atal Tunnel beneath the Pir Panjal mountain range. The tunnel connects Lahaul Valley with Manali and is considered one of the longest highway tunnels built at high altitude.
The tunnel dramatically reduces travel time and offers travelers a smooth transition from the cold desert terrain of Spiti into the lush green landscapes of Kullu Valley.
