Manali to Zanskar Valley Taxi 2026 – Route, Fare & Plan

Manali to Zanskar Valley Taxi Service 2026: Route, Fare and an Honest 2-Day Plan via Shinku La

For years, reaching Zanskar meant a long detour through Kargil. Now there is a direct road from the Manali side, over Shinku La, and Zanskar has gone from “too remote” to “can we do this from Manali?”

You can. But this is not a normal Manali taxi trip, and a quote that doesn’t tell you what you are actually paying for is a problem. We run taxis out of Manali ourselves, so this page tells you how the trip really works: route, season, vehicle, days, and what drives the fare.

The Route, Stop by Stop

You leave Manali through the Atal Tunnel, drop into Lahaul, and follow the Manali–Leh highway through Sissu and Keylong to Darcha, about 100 km from Manali. Past Darcha the road turns off towards Zanskar and climbs roughly 40 km to Shinku La.

After the pass you pass Lakhang and then Gonbo Rangjon, the lone sacred peak that Zanskari people treat with great respect. From there the road continues through Kargyak and Purne to Padum, the main town of Zanskar, at about 3,650 m.

The rough part is the stretch between Shinku La and Purne. That is why vehicle choice matters more here than on any normal Manali route.

Is the Road Open? When to Go

The Darcha–Shinku La–Padum road is a seasonal road. Plan for May to October, with June to September the safest window for weather and road condition.

Late October is the risky end of the season, because an early snowfall can close the pass without much warning. We check live road status before every Zanskar booking and tell you straight if the date is a bad idea. We would rather lose a booking than put you on a closed pass.

Do You Need a Permit?

For Indian citizens, recent travel guides report that no separate permit is needed for Zanskar Valley via the Shinku La route in 2026. [VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING: confirm the current rule with the Kullu/Lahaul administration, and add what applies to foreign nationals.] Rules on new routes change, so we confirm the latest position when you book.

Taxi Fare: What You Are Actually Paying For

Zanskar fares are not one number. Two quotes can look very different and both be “right”, because they cover different things. Always ask:

  1. How many days is the fare for? One-way drop, or a round trip with driver halts?
  2. Is the driver’s night halt included? On a multi-day trip this is a real cost.
  3. Which vehicle exactly? An Innova and a 4×4 are not the same price or the same trip.
  4. Is the return empty? A one-way drop from Padum often means the car comes back without passengers.
  5. What is not included? Your meals, hotel and permits (if any) are normally separate.
Option Days Vehicle Our fare
Manali → Padum, one-way drop 2 [Innova Crysta / ScorpioN] ₹[YOUR RATE]
Manali → Padum → Manali 5 [Innova Crysta / ScorpioN] ₹[YOUR RATE]
Manali → Padum → Manali (4×4) 5 [4×4 vehicle] ₹[YOUR RATE]
Padum local sightseeing day 1 Local ₹[YOUR RATE]

Fares depend on season and vehicle. Message us your dates and group size for an exact figure.

Which Vehicle Should You Take?

  • SUV (Innova Crysta, Scorpio): the sensible choice for most families and couples in dry summer conditions.
  • 4×4: the better choice if you want margin on the rough stretch after Shinku La, or you are travelling early or late in the season.
  • Sedan: we do not recommend it for this route. The road after the pass is too rough and the ground clearance is too low.

Altitude, Fuel and Practical Tips

  • Altitude: sleeping at Jispa on Day 1 helps your body adjust before the pass. Our Zanskar trips carry an oxygen cylinder and a pulse oximeter.
  • Fuel: top up at Keylong or Darcha before you start the climb.
  • Network: expect little or no mobile signal for long stretches. Tell family your plan before you leave.
  • Cash: carry enough, as digital payments are unreliable in the valley.
  • Weather: the mountains are fine in the morning and different by afternoon. We start early for a reason.

What About the Shinku La Tunnel?

A tunnel under Shinku La is being built to make this link all-season. It is a multi-year project, so for planning purposes treat Zanskar via Shinku La as a summer-season trip for now.

Why Book This Taxi With Manali Travel Adventure

  • Our own fleet. The car is ours and the driver is ours, with no third-party operator in between.
  • Drivers who know the road. Mountain driving on Shinku La is a skill, not a job anyone can do.
  • One WhatsApp contact for the whole trip, from the first message to the drop.
  • Honest advice. If your dates are wrong or your vehicle choice is risky, we will say so.
